How to Merge PDF Files (Without Uploading Them)

Last updated

Combine several PDFs into one on Windows, Mac or your phone, keep the page order you want, and avoid common problems with protected files.

Merging PDFs is one of the most common document chores: combining scanned receipts for an expense report, attaching a signed form to a contract, or turning chapters into a single file. You can do it in a browser in under a minute, and you don’t have to upload your documents anywhere to do it.

Merge PDFs in your browser

  1. Open Merge PDF and drop in your files, or tap Choose files on a phone.
  2. Check the order. The list shows each file’s size and page count; use the arrows (or drag on desktop) to reorder.
  3. Select Merge PDFs, then download merged.pdf.

Because the files are combined by your browser, nothing is sent to a server — useful for tax documents, medical records or anything confidential.

Need only some pages?

Merging always includes every page. To drop pages first, use Split PDF to extract the pages you want, or merge everything and then remove pages visually in Organize PDF Pages.

Built-in options on your computer

  • Mac: open the first PDF in Preview, show thumbnails (View → Thumbnails), and drag other PDFs into the sidebar. Then File → Export as PDF.
  • Windows: there is no built-in merge tool. Microsoft Edge can open PDFs but not combine them, so a browser tool or Adobe Acrobat is the usual route.
  • iPhone/iPad: in the Files app, select several PDFs, tap the ••• menu and choose Create PDF.

Common problems

A file asks for a password

Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked to read their pages. Enter the password when prompted; the merged file will not be protected, so add a new password with Protect PDF if you need one.

“The author does not allow rearranging pages”

Some PDFs carry permission settings that forbid assembling pages into other documents. We respect those restrictions; ask the document’s author for an unrestricted copy.

The merged file is huge

Merging doesn’t recompress anything, so the result is roughly the sum of the inputs. Run it through Compress PDF afterwards.

Bookmarks disappeared

Most simple merge tools, including ours, copy pages but not the bookmarks panel. Links and form fields within pages are generally kept.
