How to use it
- Enter your regular salary and the bonus amount.
- Choose whether the bonus is paid separately or with a regular paycheck.
- Select your state and calculate.
How bonuses are withheld
Bonuses are supplemental wages. If paid separately, employers may withhold a flat 22% federal rate (37% on supplemental wages over $1 million in the year). With the aggregate method, the bonus is added to a regular paycheck and withheld as if that larger check were your normal pay. Either way Social Security and Medicare apply, and the tax you actually owe is settled on your return.

Limits and known limitations
- State supplemental withholding rates are not modeled separately; state tax is estimated at your annual rate.
- Bonus withholding is an advance payment; your real tax is settled on your return.
Frequently asked questions
Why was so much taken from my bonus?
Federal withholding on separately paid bonuses is usually a flat 22%, plus 7.65% Social Security and Medicare and any state tax. If your actual tax rate is lower, the difference comes back as a refund.
