Limits and known limitations

  • You must know the password. Incorrect passwords are rejected and the tool never tries other passwords automatically.
  • If the document’s author also restricted printing, copying or editing, those restrictions are kept in the unlocked copy. Only the requirement to type a password is removed.
  • PDFs that open without a password but have usage restrictions are not changed.
  • Some uncommon or proprietary encryption schemes (for example certificate-based security) are not supported.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove a password I don’t know?

No. Removing protection without the password would mean bypassing someone else’s security, which this tool does not do.

Why are printing or copying restrictions still there?

An open password and usage restrictions are separate protections. We remove only the open password you supplied and keep the author’s restrictions, because we cannot verify that you are the document’s owner.
